Topics

The Moolmes classification divides the catalogue into eight subject classes, each with four subdivisions. Shelf marks are stable: once an entry is catalogued its mark does not change, even if the entry is revised or moved between collections. This page is the authoritative list of classes in current use.

Reading a shelf mark

A shelf mark has three parts. The class number places the entry in one of the eight subject classes. The decimal identifies the subdivision within that class. A letter suffix, where present, marks the item type: TK for a printable toolkit, PUB for a long-form publication, and CP for a community programme record.

Example. MC 640.3 is the “cleaning and maintenance routines” subdivision of the home, food and daily systems class. TK 640-A is the printable seasonal changeover checklist filed against the same class.

Cross-references and see-also headings

Several subjects sit naturally in more than one class. Household emergency planning, for example, involves records, food storage and communication as well as preparedness. The catalogue records one primary mark and any number of see-also headings, which appear as related topics on each collection. Cross-references are reviewed when a class is revised so that they do not accumulate silently.
