Public knowledge library · established 2019 · Winnipeg, Manitoba

A working library of practical knowledge for everyday life.

Moolmes collects, organises and publishes educational material on the ordinary tasks that households, learners and community groups carry out: keeping records, planning time and money, preparing for the seasons, communicating clearly and taking part in local decisions. Everything in the catalogue is free to read, indexed by subject, and reviewed before publication.

Where Your Filing System Actually Breaks

Most home filing systems fail at the point of entry, not the point of retrieval. This article follows a document from the letterbox to its final resting place and identifies the four moments where it is most likely to be lost, with a low-effort correction for each.

Practical Planning

Estimating Time for Work You Have Never Measured

Time estimates for unfamiliar tasks are unreliable in a predictable direction. We look at why, describe reference-class estimating in plain terms, and set out a small measurement habit that improves estimates within about six weeks.

Household Finance Basics

Reading a Utility Bill Line by Line

A worked walk-through of a typical Canadian utility statement: the difference between usage and delivery charges, how adjustments appear, what a budget billing plan does to the numbers, and which questions to put to the provider when a total looks wrong.

Reading and Study Skills

Three Passes Through a Difficult Text

Dense material rewards a structured approach. This article describes a survey pass, a question pass and a consolidation pass, with an example applied to a municipal planning report.

Community Resources

How a Municipal Committee Reaches a Decision

Agendas, delegations, motions, amendments and referrals, explained through the ordinary life cycle of a local proposal. Includes what a resident can realistically influence and at which stage.
